Painting with Light
A quick definition of my aim as a Photographer is to show a subject in it's best light. My interpretion of the subject through the lens together with my use of Light is what makes or breakes the image.
The three photographs left give a demonstration of how a lighting scheme evolves and is an example of how showing is quicker than explaining.
Photo (a) shows my basic lighting set up with the light coming from below the objects through a translucent sheet. This light gives some detail to the edges of the objects and shining through the round filters it shows their colour.
Photo (b) shows how the addition of a fill light from the side that adds detail to the objects.
Photo (c) is almost identical to (b) but the fill light has been moved a little nearer to slightly increase it's intensity.
While photos (b) and (c) are very similar it is (c) that gives the most accurate rendition of the tonal values of the subject and lifts the exposure that causes the white print to appear white.
The difference might seem small but as Leonardo da Vinci said, "Perfection requires attention to triffles and Perfection is no trifle." It probably sounds better in Italian when you don't think of the dessert.

"Photography is such a versatile medium that for me it always seems to invite endless possibilities. There are more roads to explore than can possibly be travelled in any lifetime. It always offers challenges and the search for solutions that for me is part of the attraction, it really is painting with light and sculpturing in time" - Kevin Thomas
I gain an immense amount of personal satisfaction from being able to work with a tradition view camera. My Horseman FA45 has all the benefits of modern engineering and I use some of the finest lenses ever manufactured. The FA stands for "Fine Art" and it is capable of producing a 4 by 5 inch negative or transparency of exceptional quality. Even so just like the earliest photographers I need a dark cloth to see the image on the ground glass that is upside-down and back-to-front. It reminds me that ultimately any camera is a box that simply lets in light. The skill in making an image lies with the photographer.
